Finance teams are rolling out AI agents faster than they can govern them - or prove them

Uprovd Take Avalara's data - nearly every finance leader under pressure to show agent ROI, half seeing only limited returns - captures the exact moment Uprovd is built for, when deployment has outrun both governance and proof.

Avalara’s new research, reported this week by CFO Dive, surveyed more than 1,500 CFOs and senior finance leaders across the US, UK, India and Australia who have already deployed, piloted or seriously weighed AI agents inside their financial processes. Its title says the quiet part out loud: the rush to put agents to work is outpacing the financial controls meant to keep them in check.

The career stakes are striking. Almost every respondent reported feeling real pressure to demonstrate that their agent investments are returning something, and half described that pressure as significant. Yet only half could say those same initiatives had delivered even limited measurable ROI to date.

That mismatch - agents live everywhere, proof of their worth almost nowhere - is Uprovd’s home ground. Governing autonomous AI means tying each agent’s spend to the outcome it produces before the budget review, not scrambling to reconstruct it afterward.

This is Uprovd's analysis of third-party reporting. Original article linked above.
