Gartner to CFOs: govern your AI agents before you scale them

Gartner this week urged finance chiefs to slow down before turning AI agents loose on real work. In new guidance, the research firm argued that most early agent pilots stumble not because the technology is weak, but because no one has drawn clear lines around what the agent may touch, do, or decide.

Its advice flips the usual scorecard. Rather than grading a pilot on how autonomous or cost-saving it is, Gartner says the first test should be governance readiness - whether every action the agent takes can be traced, reviewed, and reversed. Start small, in a sandbox with reversible errors and named owners across finance, IT, and risk, then expand only once the controls hold.
